There are a lot of disgruntled Toblerone fans in the UK today after its product maker Mondelēz International revealed a new shape for the distinctive chocolate bar (pictured).
The triangular chocolate chunks remain, but theyve been spaced out with larger gaps between the triangles. As a result, the weight of the 400g bar has been reduced to 360g and the 170g bar to 150g. The size of the packaging, however, remains the same.
The move has angered consumers – #toblerone is trending on Twitter and it only takes a quick glance to see the reaction to the change is largely a bad one – but Mondelēz stresses it is in response to a rise in the cost of ingredients, and it had to make a decision between changing the look of the bars or raising the price.
"We chose to change the shape to keep the product affordable for our customers," the company says in a statement. "Like many other companies, we are experiencing higher costs for numerous ingredients. We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on shelf, is affordable and retains the triangular shape, we have had to reduce the weight of just two of our bars in the UK, from the wider range of available Toblerone products."
Confectionery reducing in size is a common grumble among consumers, but this time it isnt the weight reduction thats upset them. It seems fans would have preferred one less triangle and a length reduction, rather than a change to the well known and clearly loved shape. At least that way some packaging could have been saved, too.
