Johnson’s Sausage Shoppe Inc. is recalling “an undetermined amount” of beef jerky sold under three brands after state inspectors found evidence it had been shipped without being properly inspected.

The Class I recall, posted Monday by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, states that no confirmed illnesses have been reported in connection with the jerky, which was sold in retail locations on or before Jan. 5.

“This is a health hazard situation wher there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” according to the definition of a Class I recall.

Consumers can identify the recalled jerky by looking for the Wisconsin legend with the number 293 on the label or packaging. Specific brands and flavors recalled are:

North Oak Peppercorn Jerky;

North Oak Hickory Smoked Jerky;

Johnson’s Sausage Shoppe Inc. Beef Jerky;

Johnson’s Sausage Shoppe Inc. “Our Famous” Beef Jerky;

Johnson’s Sausage Shoppe Inc. Nitrite Free! Beef Jerky; and

Twisted Oak Farms Nitrite Free! Beef Jerky.

“The establishment has voluntarily recalled the product and is working with DATCP to collect as much product as possible,” according to the Wisconsin agriculture department recall notice.

“All retail products were sold in quarter pound packages. Wholesale product is packaged without preprinted weight. …Anyone with signs or symptoms of foodborne illness should contact a physician. Consumers who have any of these products can return them to the original place of purchase or discard them.
