Within the framework of the joint "Development of the fruit and vegetable sector. Additional financing " program, the World Bank sent $500 million to develop the fruit and vegetable industry of Uzbekistan
Azernews reports on how the additional funds will help manufacturers to upgrade equipment and increase the productivity of enterprises.
The fruit and vegetable sector support project was approved in January of this year, and in June the World Bank started its implementation. It is noted that one of the stages provides for the purchase of seeds, seedlings, water-saving technologies, as well as equipment for processing fruits and vegetables. In addition, the allocated funds will build vegetable stores and greenhouses.
The project will also support research institutes in developing new methods for growing fruit and vegetable crops, plus their storage and processing after harvesting.
Fruitnews.ru quoted World Bank manager Hedeki Mori as saying: "Agriculture generates about 16% of GDP and provides jobs for almost 14.5 million people in rural areas. That is why this sector is the focus of attention for the government of Uzbekistan, and the development of fruit and vegetable farming in particular is an important part of the governments investment strategy.”
