Pork processor Smithfield Foods is set to expand its product range with the launch of a plant-based protein portfolio under the company’s Pure Farmland brand.
The new range includes soy-based products such as breakfast patties, meatballs, burger patties and pre-seasoned protein starters.
Smithfield Foods chief commercial officer John Pauley said: “We’re thrilled to announce the launch of this new product portfolio under our Pure Farmland brand. We’ve been exploring the alternative protein space, and have taken our time to get it right.
“With this launch, we are bringing together our expertise in creating market-leading food products, our organisational commitment to sustainability, and our deep understanding of ‘flexitarian’ consumers, to deliver a broad variety of flavourful plant-based protein choices that consumers want and can afford at a great value.”
The company claims that all its products were produced in the US, contain natural flavours and are free from gluten and dairy.
Packaged in trays that are made from more than 50% recycled material, the products will be made available at Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market and Target, starting next week.
Pauley added that the brand will be available at more than 5,000 retail stores by February.
Smithfield Foods further noted that it will protect one square foot of farmland with every package sold.
Owned by China-based WH Group, the company plans to branch out into the food services sector.
